This was followed by the first of the se- minar's four round tables, entitled "The 'socialisation of suffering' after the end of the ETA truce," with the participation of: Emilio Alfaro ( journalist), Gaizka Fer- nandez Soldevilla (historian at the Me- morial Centre for Victims of Terrorism Foundation), Amaia Goenaga (historian at the Institute for Memory, Coexistence and Human Rights/Gogora) and Sara Hi- dalgo (historian at the University of the Basque Country/EHU). María Jiménez, professor of Communication at the Uni- versity of Navarra, moderated the panel. The following day, the seminar resumed with the panel discussion "The fight against ETA: penultimate act (social res- ponse, anti-terrorist struggle with police and judicial response, and ETA's 'swan song')", moderated by Faustino López de Foronda (member of the board of trustees of the Buesa Foundation) and featuring Luis R. Next, Ludger Mees and Antonio Rive- ra, professors of Contemporary History at the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), and Alberto Surio, a journa- list from El Diario Vasco, took part in the round table discussion entitled "The year of assassinations: Fernando Buesa, José Luis López de Lacalle, José Ramón Re- calde, Juan Mari Jauregui and José Mari Korta," which was moderated by Eduardo Mateo (head of projects and communica- tions at the Buesa Foundation). Finally, the round table entitled "Actors in a time of crisis" took place, featuring an interesting debate between Izaskun Bilbao (former president of the Basque Parliament - EAJ-PNV), Ramón Jaure- gui (former member of the Congress of Deputies and former minister - PSE-EE), Rafael Larreina (former member of the Basque Parliament - EA), and Ramón Ra- banera (former deputy general of Álava - PP). Journalist and deputy director of Colpisa, Lourdes Pérez, was in charge of moderating the round table. To close the seminar, Jesús Prieto Menda- za (member of the board of trustees of the Fernando Buesa Foundation) and Antonio Rivera (director of the Valentín de Foronda Institute) summarised everything that had been contributed in the various presenta- tions during the two days of the seminar. The final outcome of the seminar has ena- bled us to draw a plausible interpretation of what happened in that tragic year, with the desire that such a dramatic experience will never be repeated and with the hope that it will help to address unresolved issues in the expression of Basque social and political pluralism.
