33 MARÍA SOLEDAD CONTRERAS SÁNCHEZ , originally from Puebla de Almenara (Cuenca), had lived inMadrid since the age of two. She worked in the Hu- man Resources department at Siemens. She was married and aged 51. MARÍA FERNÁNDEZ DEL AMO , A native of Azuqueca de Henares (Guadala- jara), she was studying the fifth year of Industrial Engineering at the Polytech- nic University of Madrid. She was apply- ing for an Erasmus grant to spend her final year in Paris. She was 26 years old. ANA ISABEL GIL PÉREZ , originally from Almadén (Ciudad Real), had lived in Torrejón de Ardoz since she was four- teen. She was a telecommunications tech- nician. Married, she was seven months pregnant. She was 29 SERGIO DE LAS HERAS CORREA , a native of Iriépal (Guadalajara), lived in Alcalá de Henares, where he boarded the train. An aeronautical engineer, he worked for Airbus. Aged 28, he was plan- ning to marry his girlfriend Águeda. PEDROHERMIDAMARTÍN , originally- from Seseña (Toledo), had lived in the El Carmen neighbourhood of Madrid since childhood. A member of the UGT trade union, he worked at Caixa Catalunya. Married with three children, he was 51 years old. PABLO IZQUIERDO ASANZA , He lived in Membrillera (Guadalajara), was single and lived with his mother. He worked as a track machinery operator in Renfe’s maintenance unit. He was 42 years old. Mª DEL CARMEN LOMINCHAR- ALONSO , originally from Corral de Al- mager (Toledo), lived in Leganés. Mar- ried, she was three months pregnant. She died at Atocha, where she was changing trains to go to Alcobendas. A computer programmer, she was 34 years old. JOSÉ MARÍA LÓPEZ-MENCHERO MORAGA , originally fromDaimiel (Ciu- dad Real), was a second lieutenant in the Army, specialising in veterinary medicine. He lived in Alcalá de Henares. He was married and the father of a daughter. He was 44 years old. ENCARNACIÓN MORA DONOSO , was born in Granátula de Calatrava (Ciudad Real). A domestic worker, she was divorced and the mother of three children. She lived in Torrejón de Ardoz with her partner, Rafael Serrano. Both have died. She was 63 years old. MIGUEL ÁNGEL PRIETO HU- MANES, originally from Villaluenga de la Sagra (Toledo). He commuted to Madrid every day. A telecommunications engineer, he was married and the father of two girls. He was 37 years old. BALBINA SÁNCHEZ-DEHESA FRANCÉS , originally from the Toledo town of Orgaz, from where she moved to Madrid after finishing her studies. She was a draughtswoman. She was married and the mother of two children. She was 47 years old. DAVID SANTAMARÍA GARCÍA , a native born in Guadalajara, had been on a two- week work placement at Alstom as an AVE train maintenance technician. He died at El Pozo station. He was 23 years old. GUILLERMO SENENT PALLAROLA , born in Guadalajara, was working as a trainee industrial electronics technician at Alstom. He died, alongside his friend David Santamaría, at El Pozo station. He was 23 years old. The victims killed in the attacks of 11 March 2004 were preceded years earlier, on 12 April 1985, by two other men from Cas- tile-La Mancha who were killed in an Islamist-style attack on the El Descanso restaurant in Madrid. MARÍA DEL CARMEN ALCAIDE- GONZÁLEZ , born in Fontanarejo de los Montes (Ciudad Real), lived with her parents in San Fernando de Henares, where she ran a nursery. On the day of the attack, she went to the restaurant with her boyfriend. She was 20 years old. FERNANDO ZAHONERO LÓPEZ , A native of Guadalajara, he had a calling for the military, but a parachuting acci- dent caused him to change course. He worked at the Capeins pottery factory. He was engaged to Elena Palomares; both died in the attack. He was 22 years old. And finally, whilst on Spanish military missions abroad, three members of the Security Forces born in the autonomous community. JOSÉ MARÍA GALERA CÓRDOBA , born in Albacete, a captain in the Civil Guard, was the son and grandson of Civil Guards, and the brother of military per- sonnel. He died in an attack in Qala-I- Naw (Afghanistan) whilst training local security forces. He was 33 years old. JOSÉ ANTONIO BERNAL GÓMEZ , originally from the town of Navahermosa in Toledo, was murdered near his home in Baghdad (Iraq). He joined the CNI in Au- gust 1994. He was married and the fa- ther of a daughter. He was 34 years old. GONZALO PÉREZ GARCÍA , a na- tive Toledo, a commander in the Civil Guard, trained at the General Military Academy. He was killed in January 2004 in an attack in Al Hamza (Iraq), a posting to which he had volunteered. He was 43 years old. EDUCATION, CULTURE AND COMMUNITY LIFE
