58 INTERNATIONAL COVITE YEARBOOK The COVITE Observatory warns about the consolidation of jihadism in Africa and the emerging risks for Europe T he figures compiled by the Observatory indicate that in 2025 there were at least 2,018 attacks, in which 9,901 people lost their lives. Compared with the previ- ous year, the figures show a 1.9% in- crease in the number of attacks, whilst the death toll associated with them fell by 5.2% compared with 2024. The majority of fatalities were con- centrated on the African continent, particularly in West Africa, a region that has remained the ‘global epicen- tre of terrorist activity’ for more than five years. Over the past year, 88% of global terrorism-related deaths were recorded in the northern half of the continent, which, for the first time since records began, accounted for the ten deadliest attacks of the year on a global scale. Against this back- drop, Burkina Faso and Mali contin- ue to emerge as the countries with the highest incidence of jihadist violence. 2.018 9.901 88% 9 At the end of February, the Ateneo de Madrid hosted the presentation of the yearbook of the International Observa- tory on Terrorism Studies (COVITE), a report analysing the evolution and main dynamics of global jihadist terrorism in 2025, which is still considered one of the most significant threats to international security.
