FUNDACIÓN VÍCTIMAS DEL TERRORISMO 95 - ENGLISH

24 NEWS DAY OF THE VICTIMS Valenciano also defended a memory grounded in truth: "There were victims and there were perpetrators." He recalled that more than 300 attacks still remain unsolved, a reality he described as an "open wound that demands justice." He also denounced inequalities in the recog- nition of victims and called for progress toward equal recognition, as well as an end to situations that continue to cause pain, such as tributes to terrorists or cer- tain prison benefits that generate a "fee- ling of abandonment." He reaffirmed the Foundation's com- mitment: "while some seek to erase memory, we will continue raising me- mory," and announced the opening, on July 8, of an exhibition at the Guardia Civil Orphans' School marking the 40th anniversary of the attack at Plaza de la República Dominicana. Education also occupied a central place in his speech. Valenciano stressed the need to transmit memory to new gene- rations as an essential tool for "defending truth, coexistence, and democracy." In the final part of his address, he spoke directly to the victims: "Although no- thing can repair the harm suffered, your dignity will remain intact and your me- mory will never be erased." He concluded by reaffirming the commitment to conti- nue working "tirelessly," because "Spain owes it to you" and because "a worthy democracy cannot abandon those who suffered most for defending it." The event brought together a large num- ber of authorities in the Constitutional Hall. They included the Chief of the De- fense Staff, Teodoro E. López Calderon; the president of the Court of Auditors, Enriqueta Chiclano; the Ombudsman, Ángel Gabilondo; the Chief of Staff of the Army, Amador F. Enseñat; the Chief of Staff of the Navy, Admiral Antonio Pineiro; the Secretary of State for Rela- tions with the Cortes, Rafael Simancas; the Secretary of State for Security, Aina DÍA DE LAS VÍCTIMAS
