42 COVITE FOUNDATION T he Fernando Buesa Blanco Foun- dation and COVITE documented 38 images of ETA members dis- played during the 2026 edition of the "Korrika," a race held every two years to raise money for Euskaraz Kooperatiba Sozietatea — AEK (popularly known as AEK), which is devoted to teaching and literacy in Basque among adults. The race travels through the Basque Country, Navarre, and the French Basque Country over 11 days, with an organizer's van — The Fernando Buesa Blanco Foundation and COVITE ask public institutions TO WITHDRAW SUBSIDIES FROM THE "KORRIKA" AFTER DOCUMENTING 38 IMAGES OF ETA MEMBERS DISPLAYED always accompanied by a spokesperson or master of ceremonies who animates the route and encourages runners — and a variable group of people running at all times. The race is divided into kilome- ters, and each kilometer is bought by a group or institution, allowing it to carry a wooden baton ("lekukoa"). The signatory organizations of the sta- tement, released to the media on March 31, denounced that, once again, this race promoted by AEK was used as an obsce- ne showcase for legitimizing terrorism, completely perverting its goal of promo- ting the use of Basque. In addition to the 38 images of ETA members that the two organizations were able to document, four cases were detected of "Korrika" spokespeople openly calling for the relea- se of ETA prisoners. Among the most se- rious incidents of the 2026 edition were the handover of the baton to three ETA members in San Sebastián — Balbino The two organizations denounce that the "Korrika" has once again become a showcase for the glorification of ETA prisoners, with the handing over of the baton to members of the group, the public display of images of ETA members, and the use of minors to spread messages and symbols of support for ETA prisoners. They hold AEK directly responsible for this situation and call on public institutions to stop subsidizing, sponsoring, or buying kilometers of the "Korrika" until the organization publicly condemns these events and adopts effective measures to prevent their recurrence.
