25 EXHIBITION EL DESCANSO T he Regional Minister of Justice and Public Administration of the Valencian Regional Government, Nuria Martínez San- On 12 November, at the Casa de la Cultura in Utiel, Chis inaugurated the exhibition In Memoriam for the victims and injured in the attack that took place in Madrid on 12 April 1985 — forty years ago now — against the El Descanso restaurant, located at kilometre 14.200 of the A2 motorway. This was the first Islamist attack in Spain, killing 18 people, including María Remedios Tomás Escudero from Utiel, and injuring at least 84. From 12 to 28 November, in Utiel EXHIBITION ON THE ATTACK ON THE EL DESCANSO RESTAURANT Among the 18 fatalities was María Remedios Tomas Escudero, a native of Utiel Organised by the Victims of Terrorism Foundation under the title "El Descanso. 40 years since the first mass jihadist at- tack in Spain", the exhibition consists of photographs from the EFE Agency and others provided by relatives of the vic- tims of that attack, as well as a podcast with testimonies and two audiovisuals from the RTVE documentary archive. Manuel Aguilar, a documentary film- maker at RTVE, is the curator of an exhi- bition that remained open at the Casa de la Cultura in Utiel (C/ Camino, 1) until 28 November. The opening ceremony was attended by the Valencian Regional Minister and the President of the Victims of Terror- ism Foundation, Juan Francisco Benito Valenciano, the Mayor of Utiel, Ricar- do Gabaldón Gabaldón; the Secretary General of the Valencian Federation of Municipalities and Provinces, Miguel Bailach Luengo; the president of the Association of Victims of Terrorism of the Valencian Community, José Manuel Sánchez Riera; the exhibition curator, councillors from the municipal corpora- tion and local residents.
