26 EXHIBITION EL DESCANSO SYMBOLS OF DEMOCRACY "The victims of terrorism are a symbol of our democracy. They are men and wom- en who lost their lives or were injured as a result of attacks against our rule of law," said the president of the Victims of Terrorism Foundation during his speech, adding that "this tragedy gives rise to a collective responsibility: to preserve their memory, guarantee their dignity, demand justice and defend the truth." Ricardo Gabaldón, mayor of Utiel, "thanked the Victims of Terrorism Foundation for choosing Utiel as the venue for this exhibition and agreed with the other authorities in highlight- ing the importance of keeping alive the memory and recognition of the victims of terrorism," the Utiel council said in a press release. THIRTEEN PANELS Once the speeches by the authorities had concluded, the exhibition curator explained to those present the content of an exhibition structured around thir- teen panels, two of which are dedicated to the 18 fatalities and a final In Memo- riam panel for the Valencian victims of jihad, as well as two display cases with photographs, in the following order: Terrorism and terrorists ` Mass terrorism in Spain ` Spain and the world in 1985 ` The site of the explosion ` 12 April. The bomb ` Media coverage ` The fatalities (two panels) ` Responsibility and investigation ` Support for the victims ` A new form of terrorism ` Foundation for Victims of Terrorism ` In Memoriam Valencian victims of jihad For Juan Benito, the exhibition on the attack on the El Des-canso restaurant is part of that collective commitment. "This exhibition is our modest but sincere way of paying tribute to all victims of terror- ism."
