36 I n the pages of the book Las vícti- mas de la yihad (The Victims of Ji- had), published by Espasa, together with the Fundación Centro Memoriale de las Víctimas del Terrorismo and the Fundación Víctimas del Terrorismo, it is stated that three hundred people have lost their lives as a result of jiha- dist attacks committed in our country or against Spaniards abroad. Of these, 223 were Spanish nationals, none of whom were born in Cantabria. It was the terrorist group ETA that carried out deadly attacks in Can- tabria. The first of these, on 19 Fe- his car in the opposite direction to the officers. The couple left behind two orphaned children aged eighteen and sixteen. The three fatalities were all from Santander. ETA's second deadly attack in the re- gion occurred on 22 September 2008. The explosion occurred at one o'clock in the morning, just as LUIS CONDE DE LA CRUZ , an Army brigadier, was leaving bruary 1992. A car bomb, equipped with a remote-controlled device, was placed by several ETA members on Avenida de los Deportes in Santander, next to the junction with the Albericia neighbourhood. At around 8 p.m., a police van was driving through the afo- rementioned location when one of the terrorists activated the explosive device with a remote control. The shock wave hit the police vehicle head-on and cau- sed fatal injuries to the married couple EUTIMIO GÓMEZ GÓMEZ and JU- LIA RÍOS RIOZ , who were walking nearby, as well as ANTONIO RICON- DO SOMOZA , who was travelling in CANTABRIAN VICTIMS OF TERRORIST ATTACKS ` In total, twenty-four Cantabrians were killed in terrorist attacks, all of them committed by the terrorist group ETA. Neither jihadist terrorism nor that carried out by other indigenous groups, including GRAPO, caused fatalities among the native population of Cantabria.
