FUNDACIÓN VÍCTIMAS DEL TERRORISMO 93 - ENGLISH
46 MIGUEL ÁNGEL BLANCO FOUNDATION L ast November, the Miguel Ángel Blanco Foundation presented at the University of Navarra The dig- ital exhibition: LETTERS TO MIGUEL ÁNGEL BLANCO , together with María Jiménez, professor at the Faculty of Communication, and Inés Irurita, head of the university's General Archive. This educational and social outreach project in memory of the victims of terrorism is another step forward in the commitment to raise awareness among young people about Miguel Ángel Blanco and preserve the social significance of his kidnapping and murder at the hands of ETA in July 1997, as well as the social responses pro- voked by this attack, which changed the course of the fight against terrorism. The University of Navarra Archives hold thousands of documents that the Blan- co Garrido family received in July 1997 and donated to this institution. Three years of hard work have made it possible to digitise and catalogue the materials. The research team of Narrative, Violence and Memory, led by María Jiménez, is developing various educational projects with these materials: letters, drawings, statements, etc., historical documents that show the reactions that Miguel Án- gel Blanco provoked in Spanish society. The Miguel Ángel Blanco Foundation is collaborating in the development of the project. In 2025, it was decided to produce a dig- ital exhibition that would bring togeth- er the 293 letters and drawings made by children and teenagers who wrote to the Blanco Garrido family, sending their messages to the family's personal address in Ermua in 1997. These letters were full of solidarity, emotion, anger, help- lessness and hope. Letters and drawings of immense sincerity and authenticity. These letters were kept by the family for twenty-five years until our foundation in 2022 was able to access them, organise them, package them and send them to the University of Navarra Archive. From that moment on, a long-term project was cre- ated that will bear important fruit in the future and is already being used as study and research material. Now, all these letters and drawings sent to Ermua are available for public viewing on a digital website, integrated into these two addresses: LETTERS TO MIGUEL ANGEL BLANCO and LETTERS TO MIGUEL ÁNGEL BLANCO UNAV. 293. Letters and drawings written by children and teenagers during those days of clam- our for the life of Miguel Ángel Blanco. The minors collect the symbols that flood- ed the streets and squares of the country: white hands, blue ribbons. They are a window into the past where the Spirit of Ermua is reflected, an educational resource adapted for use in classrooms that facilitates the transmission of the memory of Miguel Ángel Blanco to new generations.
