FUNDACIÓN VÍCTIMAS DEL TERRORISMO 93 - ENGLISH

78 PUBLICATIONS On Tuesday, 13 January 1981, seven hooded ETA members broke into the Avidesa ice cream factory and kidnapped its owner, 70-year-old Va- lencian businessman Luis Suñer. He was a person who epitomised that era: paternalistic, blessed by Francoism and revered in his native Alzira, although he had some trouble adapting to the new times. His captivi- ty kept Spanish society in suspense, and those responsible were never prosecuted. Journalist Sergi Moyano Hurtado reconstructs the untold and true story of the kidnapping thanks to the exclusive testimony of one of the kid- nappers, who formed an unusual mix of young people disillusioned with the course of the Transition and terrorists with several deaths to their names. This fast-paced journalistic investigation not only recreates the unexpected daily routine of a kidnapping, but also the political and social instability of the early years of democracy in Spain. From the second half of the 1960s onwards, a wave of revolutionary-ins- pired terrorism began in developed industrial societies in the West. It was a global phenomenon that was present in Japan with the Red Army, in the United States with the Weathermen, in Germany with the RAF or the Revolutionary Cells, in Italy with the Red Brigades and Prima Linea, in France with Action Directe, in Belgium with the Communist Combatant Cells... This generation rejected consumer society and was critical of the historical left, which it accused of colluding with capitalism and betraying revolutionary principles. Exalted by the struggles of the Third World and inspired by Latin Ameri- can guerrilla groups, it launched its armed challenge against the respec- tive states. In Spain, a developed society but one in which a dictatorship was living its last moments, this phenomenon was led by the PCE (r) and GRAPO, which from 1975 onwards left a bloody trail of their existence until their last assassination in 2007. This book aims to provide an over- view of the origin, ideology, strategy, composition and practices of this group throughout its long history.
