The opening ceremony was led by the Vice-Chancellor for Students and Em- ployability, Amaya Romero; the Region- al Government’s Deputy Minister for In- stitutional Relations, Javier Vicario; and the President of the Victims of Terror- ism Foundation, Juan Benito. The event was also attended by various officials, including the Chief Public Prosecutor of Ciudad Real, Miguel Ángel Carballo; the Government Sub-delegate, David Broceño; the Defence Sub-delegate, Juan Manuel del Hierro; and the Head of the Civil Guard Command, Lieuten- ant Colonel José Manuel Rodríguez, as well as municipal spokespersons and the UCLMManager, Tomás López. BRINGING THE MEMORY CLOSER TO THE YOUTH During their speeches, both the presi- dent of the Victims of Terrorism Foun- dation and Deputy Minister Vicario emphasised the importance of bringing the memory of the attacks of 11 March 2004 to university students. This is a generation that, for the most part, did not experience that day first-hand and for whom this initiative represents an opportunity for learning and reflection. The exhibition brings together 67 pho- tographs selected from the EFE archive, illustrating both the hours following the explosions on the commuter trains and the immediate public and institutional reaction. Its display on a university campus enabled hundreds of young people to encounter the visual record of what happened. Juan Benito recalled that, of the 193 fatalities, eighteen were from Castil- la-La Mancha, six of whom were born in the province of Ciudad Real. Added to this grief are the victims from Castil- la-La Mancha of the attack on the El Descanso restaurant in 1985, and of attacks carried out against Spanish inter- ests abroad. A SPACE TO REFLECT ON TERRORISM In his speech, the Deputy Regional Minister highlighted that the choice of a university setting was no coincidence. The regional government considers it essential that young people understand recent history and reflect on the conse- quences of terrorism in a democratic society. He also emphasised the THE MEMORY OF 11M REACHED THE UNIVERSITY OF CIUDAD REAL EDUCATION, CULTURE AND COMMUNITY LIFE
