46 ALBERTO JIMÉNEZ BECERRIL FOUNDATION A s it does every 30 January, the city of Seville commem- orated the anniversary of the murders of Alberto Jiménez-Becerril and Ascensión García, which marks 28 years since their deaths. To mark this emotional anniversary, Seville City Council and the Alberto Jiménez-Becerril Foundation Against Terrorism and Vio- lence organised several events in the city. Firstly, a private visit was made to the couple’s grave, located in San Fer- nando Cemetery, attended by family members, friends and representatives of the city council to lay a wreath. In the afternoon, public ceremonies were held, both religious and civil, attended by numerous relatives, friends and cit- izens, as well as numerous dignitaries such as the President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juan Ma- nuel Moreno Bonilla, the Mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz, and the President of the Foundation, Alberto Jiménez-Bec- erril García, alongside the Foundation’s trustees and other civil and military rep- resentatives. The afternoon’s events began at 5 pm at the Parish of the Tabernacle within Se- ville’s Holy Cathedral, where the city’s archbishop, Monsignor José Ángel Sainz Meneses, celebrated Holy Mass in memo- ry of Alberto and Ascensión. Following the Mass, family members, officials and members of the public proceeded to Calle Don Remondo. There, a civil ceremony was held during which a laurel wreath was laid beneath the plaque marking the spot where the attack that claimed the couple’s lives took place. Following a brief prayer in memory of the couple, delivered by Marcelino Manzano, the diocesan delegate for religious brotherhoods and confraternities of the Archdiocese of Seville, speeches were given by Teresa Jiménez-Becerril, Alberto’s sister, José Luis Sanz, Mayor of Seville, and the SEVILLE REMEMBERS ALBERTO JIMÉNEZ-BECERRIL AND ASCENSIÓN GARCÍA ON THE 28TH ANNIVERSARY OF THEIR MURDERS President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juan Manuel Moreno Bo- nilla. In her speech, Teresa began with some words of sympathy for the families of those who died in the two recent train accidents that have hit Seville and An- dalusia so hard; she also expressed her emotion at what it means to come to this part of the city every year, in memory of her brother and sister-in-law, making a plea to continue keeping their memory alive amongst the people of Seville. In his speech, the mayor highlighted the example of strength and fortitude consistently shown by the families of Alberto and Ascen, paying special trib- ute to Mrs Teresa Barrio. “We have not forgotten, because to forget would have been the greatest act of contempt, not only towards Alberto and Ascen, but towards all the victims of the terrorist group ETA,” said the mayor of Seville in his address. The event was brought to a close by Juan Manuel Moreno Bonilla, who also had words of remembrance for the victims of the rail accidents. “To- day we commemorate another day of great sorrow. We do not wish to forget that sorrow because, through this event and the work carried out by the Founda- tion, we wish to assert that the memo- ry of all the victims of the criminal group ETA cannot be consigned to a corner of history. It cannot be consigned to oblivion, as some would have it,” em- phasised the President of the Region- al Government of Andalusia in his speech. ASSOCIATIONS AND FOUNDATIONS
