FUNDACIÓN VÍCTIMAS DEL TERRORISMO 93 - ENGLISH

30 O n 12 December, the Victims of Terrorism Foundation presen- ted its awards at the Auditorium Mutua Madrileña, its traditional annual awards for the twenty-second time, in a ceremony presided over by the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Mar- salka, and the president of the Victims of Terrorism Foundation, Juan Benito Valenciano. On this occasion, the jury awarded the Adolfo Suárez Human Rights Prize jointly to Brigadier General Miguel Án- gel Ballesteros Martín and Professor Fernando Reinares Nestares . Both are key figures in understanding the global threat posed by terrorism and the funda- mental role that victims play in the fight against it. Miguel Ángel Ballesteros Martín, an ex- pert in geopolitics and terrorism preven- tion, has been a key figure in the design of national security strategies in Spain. His career as director of the Department of National Security (2018-2023) and as director of the Spanish Institute for Stra- tegic Studies has positioned him as an authoritative voice in the fight against jihadist terrorism. In addition, General Ballesteros is a staunch advocate for supporting victims of terrorism, going beyond solidarity to placing them at the heart of the fight against terrorism. To quote him, victims are key because not only do they pre- serve the "living memory" and justice, but their unity and strength represent a "great challenge" for terrorists. Fernando Reinares Nestares, for his part, is a renowned political scientist, writer and university professor specialising in terrorism and violent radicalisation.
