10 NEWS The Memorial Center for Victims of Terrorism and the National Institute of Educational Technologies and Teacher Training (INTEF) held the 5th Conferen- ce on "Memory and Prevention of Terro- rism" on June 4 and 5 at the Memorial's headquarters. The meeting, attended by the Victims of Terrorism Foundation, brought together more than 60 partici- pants, including specialists, institutional officials, and non-university teachers from across Spain, with the aim of stren- gthening the role of education in trans- mitting memory and preventing violent radicalization. During the opening session, the director of the Memorial, Florencio Domínguez, emphasized the sustained effort made in recent years to integrate the study of te- rrorism into education. "In five years, we have involved 1,500 teachers in how to tell such a difficult history as terrorism to young people who did not experience it," he said. During this period, the Memorial has developed teaching units in coopera- tion with various entities, as well as edu- cational resources designed to facilitate discussion of terrorism in the classroom. Montserrat Torija, Director-General for Support to Victims of Terrorism at the Ministry of the Interior, highlighted the distinctive nature of the Spanish mo- del of victim assistance, which has also been projected into education and the prevention of radicalization, becoming a benchmark in the Western world. Along the same lines, the Secretary of State for Education, Abelardo de la Rosa Díaz, stressed that one of today's priorities is "the promotion of peaceful and inclusive societies" from the school setting, as well as the active defense of democratic va- lues. "Education plays an essential role in building more just societies that respect human rights," he concluded. The first presentation addressed how to deal with terrorism in educational settings. Raul López Romo, head of the Memorial's exhibition and education area, and Eduardo Mateo, manager of the Fernando Buesa Foundation, pre- sented various classroom materials, in- cluding comics, video games, a speciali- zed glossary, and a digital platform with frequently asked questions arising from meetings between victims and students. These resources seek to improve unders- tanding of the terrorist phenomenon and provide tools adapted to different educa- tional stages. Next, Carola García-Calvo, senior analyst at the Elcano Royal Institute and professor at Rey Juan Carlos University, analyzed current trends in jihadism in Spain. She explained that the phenomenon shows a worrying trend toward younger profiles, with increasing involvement of minors and a strong presence of the digital envi- ronment as a space for radicalization. "It is an increasingly unstructured and indi- vidualized phenomenon," she said, placing INTEF — PREVENTION CONFERENCE AT THE MEMORIAL INTEF AND THE MEMORIAL ORGANIZE THE 5TH CONFERENCE ON "MEMORY AND PREVENTION OF TERRORISM"
