20 YEARS SINCE 11M.

A memory of grief and solidarity

Madrid, 11-03-2004. View of the destruction caused by the explosion of one of the bombs on an Atocha train. EFE/Sergio Barrenechea.

The grief could be felt in the streets and the eyes of people. Madrid was only silence and tears on that 11 March 2004, when several bombs exploded on trains of three of its stations, the bloodiest terrorist attack in Europe. It left 193 dead and over 2,000 injured, but also two memories: the solidarity and efficient response to a tragedy of this scale.

The aim of this exhibition is to remember, through 67 photographs from the EFE news agency’s archive, the victims of that massacre, who deserve this homage on the 20th anniversary of the attacks which silenced Spain. But it also wishes to pay homage to the hundreds of public servants (healthcare professionals, firefighters, law enforcement officers, psychologists…) who on the longest day, ceaselessly cared for the injured and assisted their families and loved ones. And to the ordinary citizens, the taxi drivers, the EMT city bus drivers and to all those residents of Madrid who went above and beyond to help. We were all on those trains.
